Just like when Lemmy said Motörhead wasn’t heavy metal, they just played rock and Yes I Am Old But I Saw Black Sabbath On Stage shirt roll. A symptom of the Universe is still my favorite Sabbath song. I’ve heard Tony say more than a few times he always considered Sabbath to be a rock & blues band, not heavy metal & played the way they did out of necessity & what influenced them. Lemmy never considered Motorhead the original speed metal band, but an old school rock & roll band that played really fast, loud & he said once he identified w/ punk more than metal. The ones that end up creating a genre’ or sub-genre’ rarely ever see themselves as the originators, but those that followed their lead, which I think says a lot for who they are as people & musicians. Ok, did I miss the part in the interview where they actually said they hated being a heavy metal band? It’s annoying that Rock or Heavymetal or whatever it’s being called now gets slated but I can tell you the number of pop groups or RnB artists that are still going 50 years…. oh wait there’s none!! And I know that type of music genre hasn’t been around as long as Rock or Metal but it’s pretty much a guarantee that they won’t last that long. I saw them twice in America, both times with Ozzie.

Best Yes I Am Old But I Saw Black Sabbath On Stage shirt
Call them a classic British blues band after the Yes I Am Old But I Saw Black Sabbath On Stage shirt Yardbirds. Whatever. They are alpha and omega. All comes back to Sabbath. Thank you, Black Sabbath and Ozzy for everything all of you have done to encourage music. There may never be another group that has inspired as Black Sabbath had. You’re truly, truly legends of the metal and will always be.
I met them as a competition winner when they did their original come back to tour in 97. I got so emotional I gave Ozzy the gift I had brought (a picture of his recently departed bulldog Bullseye in a silver Rennie Mackintosh frame) then I burst into tears and spent the rest of the meet and greet in the corner of the room talking to Tony Dennis. One of the best days of my life! They were recording the gig for the live release and you can hear me screaming on it.
